Challenger Cold Air Intake Guide
So you want more power huh? Well a cold air intake is not really the solution you are looking for…but wait don’t leave! After-market intakes do increase horsepower a lot more after other modifications(intake & exhaust manifolds, heads, cams, exhaust components) are done to our Challengers.
They are still a great way to enter the Challenger after-market parts world & to catch the modification bug! That is, once you start modifying your Challenger….there is no end to the madness. Everyone wants more power & they even say when a man gets to the 600 horsepower mark its just a matter of time before he wants more.
To say there is debate about what makes a good CAI(cold air intake) & which brand or design is better is a massive understatement. The conversation literally has no end & has very likely been discussed on every single auto enthusiast forum on the planet. I did a large amount of research before making my purchase & decided to create this guide to make that easier for you.
In the end I went with a Stack Performance Bullet Intake which is a “fender” style intake with the filter outside of the engine compartment, & required an IAT(intake air temperature) sensor relocate. I did notice a gain of about 15 rear wheel horsepower when using the TT DYNO software to compare the difference.
So without further ado I give you my Challenger Intake Guide! The following represents some of the more popular intake manufacturers:
Air Hammer Gen II Pheonix Cold Air Intake – $436.49
The GenII Pheonix AIRHAMMER intake is the newest design available. It is the lightest and most powerful high performance air intake on the market today! It is built to last with all military/aerospace grade components and looks incredible under the hood. This is a very easy item to install, even for the beginner weekend warrior mechanic. The GenII Pheonix AIRHAMMER fits all 3rd generation Hemi engines equipped in Chrysler 300’s, Dodge Challenger, Charger, and Magnum vehicles. The intake flows well over 760 CFM for the hungry 6.1L SRT8 & modified 5.7L motors and comes with a cleanable dry filter. The included filter has less restriction clean & dirty, filters better, holds more particulates with less pass through, tougher construction, and fits better than any other filter on the market.
Volant Cold Air Intake – Manufacturer claims 18-22 RWHP & 25-30 TQ – $361.20
The 5.7 and 6.1 Hemi in the Magnum intake system actually allows you to break the tires loose! This intake gives you the performance that you can feel and includes a new air duct that flows into the air box through a high flow filter with a velocity stack built into it. The system pulls air from the front of the vehicle and an added air scoop on the bottom of the Volant air box for that continous charge of cold air.
Volant Air Filter Box: Our Cross-Link polyethylene box is engineered to each specific application for low restriction and an increase in air volume. It insulates and protects the filter from engine heat, moisture, dust and debris to provide colder air to the engine for an increase in horsepower.
Volant Air Duct: Factory air inlet ducts use sound baffles and awkward bends which restrict flow. Our Cross-Link polyethylene air ducts are sculptured to give the engine less restrictive breathing. Incorporating larger diameters and unique bends, that can’t be duplicated with metal ducts, allow for maximum airflow velocity and throttle response.
Volant Pro 5 Filter: Many of our intakes come with this cleanable and reusable high grade cotton filter media with five-layers of protection. It reduces air restriction and increases engine output by using precision pleat geometry, that optimizes airflow throughout the intake system. We recommend using Volant cleaning and oiling system for servicing the Pro 5 Filter.
NEW PowerCore® Filter: The PowerCore® air filter is the most revolutionary on the market. Manufactured by Donaldson® to Volant’s specifications, the PowerCore® uses advanced Ultra-Web® NanoFiberSM technology. This material is a high-quality synthetic, that won’t deteriorate as easily as traditional paper element and cotton/gauze filter media, while also providing vastly improved filtration up to 99.99%. In addition, it’s water resistant and never needs oiling. The PowerCore® works by directing air into the front of the filter, where it is channeled into its fluted design. The channels are alternately sealed, allowing air to enter through an open flute and forcing it to exit out an adjacent flute. This allows the air to be filtered in one pass through the Ultra-Web® NanoFiber media with less restriction, allowing clean air to enter your engine for increased airflow and higher filtration efficiency. This technology allows the PowerCore® air filter to include a 4 year or 100,000 miles warranty when used in urban conditions.
Volant offers Polished Aluminum or Carbon Fiber Look lids. (Some of our older applications and low production intake kits have the carbon fiber look lid.)
Polished Aluminum Lid: Available on all Volant’s popular intake systems, this embossed and polished lid features a high-grade neoprene foam backing for good sound insulation that enhances your engine compartment.
Carbon Fiber Lid: Made from ABS plastic with a carbon fiber appearance for a custom look. This lid is included on older applications and low production air intake kits.
High Performance Silicon Connectors: Our silicone hose connectors provide flexibility while maintaining strength and thermal stability. They won’t crack or deform over time like rubber connectors.
Stainless Steel Clamps: We only use marine-grade, stainless steel clamps that provide optimal performance to provide a solid seal that won’t loosen or deteriorate.
AEM Brute Force Intake System – Manufacturer claims 24 horsepower – $359.20
AEM Intake Systems are designed to produce massive horsepower and torque gains as well as better engine sound when used as a replacement for the factory airbox and air filter. AEM intake systems are designed, tuned, and dyno-tested to fit specific cars and trucks. These kits usually include an oversized AEM Dryflow synthetic washable air filter for optimum air flow, filtration, and performance while allowing easy oil-free cleaning. Most AEM intake systems use mandrel-bent aluminum intake tubes, powder coated heat shields, and high quality hardware designed to reduce restriction and reduce intake temperature.
K&N 69 Series Typhoon Kits – Manufacturer claims 18.23 horsepower @ 5217 RPM – $356.79
Built for performance and show, the Typhoon® Air Intake System is a free-flowing mandrel-bent aluminum tube induction system designed to fit many sport compact performance vehicles. Each kit is proven on a rear-wheel dynamometer to increase horsepower and torque. Typhoon intakes come in one of three designs; cold air intakes (CA), short ram intakes (SR), or complete cold air (CCA) intakes which can be configured as either a cold air intake or a short ram intake. Available in an assortment of powder coated colors and polished aluminum, these kits are sure to please in every way. They come with an oversized High-Flow conical air filter designed to provide increased surface area and dust capacity. This extra surface area provides even more airflow at lower restriction than a standard K&N O/E replacement filter that is limited to the size of the factory air box. The oversize air filter also captures more dirt increasing the service life before a cleaning is required (up to 100,000 miles). Some Typhoon Air Intakes are not legal for use in California and other states adopting California emission standards while others are CARB exempt and 50 state legal.

Stack Performance Bullet Intake – $309.99
We have taken time to design our cold air intake system to perform to “our” standards. Our intake system is designed to draw actual cold air from a source outside of the hot engine bay.
Cold air provides more oxygen for the engine to burn. Cooler air has a higher density (greater mass per unit volume), thus cold air intakes generally perform by introducing cooler air from a point outside of the hot engine bay.
The term “cold air intake” is often used to describe other methods of increasing oxygen to an engine, which may even increase the temperature of the air coming into an engine. The true name for these intakes is “Ram Air Intake”. Do not be fooled. In designing and engineering our cold air intake system, we have used these strategies to obtain our required level of performance:
- Increased the diameter of the air intake, providing increased airflow.
- Smooth interior of the intake tube, reducing air resistance.
- Engineered tube shape to offer a more direct route to the intake manifold.
- Tuned the length of the intake tube to provide maximum airflow at certain engine speeds and RPMs.
- A more efficient, hi-flow air filter with open end element.
- Cold air provides more oxygen for the engine to burn.
- 5.7L Challengers will be required to extend factory harness using the provided wires and connectors.

JLT Carbon Fiber CAI – Manufacturer claims 9.13 RWHP and 16.2 RWTQ – $299.88
JLT Performance Carbon Fiber Cold Air Intake for Dodge HEMI 5.7 and 6.1 Charger, Magnum, 300C and Challengers
We are thrilled to finally branch out and include the Dodges in our line of Cold Air Intakes. We used the knowledge we gained from years of building induction kits for 94-09 Mustangs and Ford trucks and built a work of art for the HEMI cars.
We started from scratch building a huge Carbon Fiber intake tube that measures 4.5” on the filter side and a full 4” on the throttle body side. Unlike most kits that are only 3.5” on the throttle body side, our kit will adapt to the larger throttle bodies that are available.
The kit includes the Carbon Fiber JLT tube, smooth silicon reducer to the throttle body, silicon coupler to filter mount, clamps, Aluminum filter mount, HUGE 4.5 X 9” S&B Powerstack air filter and ABS plastic heat shield. We used materials like carbon fiber and ABS to resist engine heat and keep inlet air temps nice and low. Metal tubes and shields absorb heat and will transfer it to the incoming air. Why surround your filter in a metal shield? I never understood that.
In testing, we took a SRT 8 Charger with stock airbox and strapped it down to the dyno. The only mods on this car are removed cats and MSD coils and all else was stock. The car made great power stock with 376.74 RWHP and 371.49 RWTQ. We made 2 runs to be sure the numbers were correct.
Next we installed the full JLT CAI kit and allowed time for engine temps to come back down to the stock runs. With the JLT kit power made a nice jump to 395.87 RWHP and 387.69 RWTQ for a huge 19.13 RWHP and 16.2 RWTQ gain!!
We were lucky enough that the car’s owner had a previously installed Airaid CAI with the car, so might as well test it against the JLT right?
We then installed the Airaid complete kit and with proper cool down made another couple of runs netting in 392.44 RWHP and 387.77 RWTQ a loss of almost 3.5 RWHP over the JLT. What we noticed on the graph was that with the Airaid the HP and TQ fell off at 5750 RPM and the JLT kept pulling.
We then had another local shop do another test. This was a SRT8 300C and it also had the Airaid intake along with cams and a ported throttle body. Results were about the same with the JLT gaining 4 additional RWHP and 1-5 RWTQ over the Airaid intake ending at 420 RWHP and 420 RWTQ!
We also noticed that cold air intakes for the Dodges were priced very high for what you got. At JLT we don’t over price! Retail on this kit in real carbon fiber will be only $299.
Please note: CAI Now comes standard with Blue Filter. Red Filter is available upon request, put in the order notes when ordering that you would like a red filter.
Roto-Fab Intake – Manufacturer claims 14 hp on 5.7L(RT) – $299.95
Are you tired of a tube and a filter being referred to as a “Cold air intake”? If so, you’ll like our approach to designing and building air intakes. We start by designing the air box that really fits your car. It’s much more than the typical “L” shape piece of sheetmetal you are used to seeing. Our box is designed to contour the surrounding components. This enables us to have a very large box and filter while maintaining a barrier between the filter and harmful engine and radiator heat. The bottom of our air box is formed and cut for coupling to the stock air inlet hole. (see the pic of the installed air box with the filter removed) Additionally, we have a triangular inlet on the outboard side of the air box. Because of the location, it draws cooler air from the same area as the bottom opening. The result is a larger volume of cooler air when you need it. Black anodized aluminum brackets mount to existing locations on your vehicle. No modifications are required for installation. Our custom molded air box coupler attaches to the air box with 6 stainless steel 10-32 screws. On the inside of the box, it has a large 6″ mounting flange to accept the huge air filter. The larger opening ensures you won’t be starving your motor during acceleration. As the coupler passes through the air box wall, it transitions to 5″ OD to accept our high gloss black silicone hump hose. The hump hose takes up the movement of the air tube. This design allows us to mount the airbox assembly solidly to maintain a good seal between our intake components while still having the ability to absorb motor rock. Most intakes simply cut an oversize hole for this. The other end of the hump hose accepts our custom molded air inlet tube which has a huge 5″ OD inlet. The tube transitions down through its length allowing the air to gain velocity as it travels towards the throttle body. At the throttle body, we use a high gloss silicone hose that mounts our tube solidly so good alignment is maintained, even during motor rock. From start to finish, we have designed and built this air intake with all of the qualities to make it work! Please compare our design and components to the competion and you’ll see the differences. Dyno results have been very good with our intake. With a 5.7 motor, we picked up nearly 14 HP with gains in torque over most of the curve. More importantly, when you install this air intake, you will feel the difference! One of our first units went on a car already equipped with a “tube and filter” air intake. The owner was pleasantly surprised at the gains of our intake as compared to the competition. Another prototype went on a stock 300C. The feedback was the same-noticable acceleration gains and an awesome sound. We’ve added a close-up picture of a competitor’s air box. This area is on the engine side just behind the radiator. Several leading companies offer a metal wall with this same open area for clearance of hoses and wiring harnesses in this region. This happens to be the easiest route for your air filter to draw air. The air goes straight through the radiator, gets extremely hot, and then straight into your air filter! It’s a seriously flawed design. Keep in mind, when the hood is open during chassis dyno testing, the filter can easily draw air from the top side, so you don’t see this problem show up on the dyno, but your hood is closed when you’re driving down the road! As you can see from our air box pics, our box is molded to clear all of the components and maintain a seal to your stock air inlet on the chassis. This is just one more area where we’ve spent the time and effort to make our intake superior to the competition. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our products.

How about including Arrington Engine’s “Shop Hemi.com” as well? they use a Green performance air filter for their set up. Supposedly their CAI makes the most advertised horsepower gains of them all. IMHO, it’s worth a look!
